King George Roscoe P-Coltrane the First

King George Roscoe P-Coltrane the First
Viva and Jerry, from Viva and Jerry's Country Music Videos, love our little (relative term) basset hound. Jerry thinks he swaggers like a king, so we all started calling him King George. This is the picture we took of george this year (his crown is from BK) that we framed and gave to Viva and Jerry as a Christmas present.

George, George, George of the Jungle

What is a new home with out a dog to fill it?

So god likes to mess with Mike, his wife is from the Badger state and his new pup is from the land of Hawkeyes. HA! :)

This is George, our new puppy/dog. His full name is Mr. George Washington, but we might just shorten it to George. Actually, George is his given name but we might change it still (to Roscoe P-Coltrane, Rufus or Herman), although were kind of getting used to "George".

He was a breeding dog, a stud. But the breeder was getting older and he couldn't see as well. His wife has trouble walking. In fact, he didn't see George once and tripped over him and hurt his hip, so he decided it was time to give his dogs up. I guess George was his favorite, so when the Iowa Bassethound Rescue people came to pick him up he cried, but he knew it was for the best. (If only he could know how George is getting spoiled now.) Since George was a breeding hound, he stayed outside in his kennel which was attached to a barn that he could go inside. He doesn't really know what toys are, had no interest in his raw hide at first and has no taste for treats. To this day we can't get him to eat treats -- so Annie and Beetle, you guys can look forward to some snacks.

He's only 15 months old, born 11/12/2007, which is a bit younger than we planned on. His age is proving to be tiring -- he's still so young, he's still a puppy and he's got the energy of a puppy. So we have to wear him out from time to time so he doesn't get in much trouble. Which also wears us out - I keep falling asleep on the couch and Mike falls asleep with the TV on. But we cannot complain because George is a barrel of laughs. He's so funny!

The family in charge of Iowa Bassethound Rescue was supposed to come up to visit last weekend to do a home visit and sleepover with George while they were up in Minneapolis for the Pet Expo. But unfortunately they had to cancel last minute so that they could pick up some dogs and get them into foster homes and take some dogs to their forever homes. So we couldn't complain much because its good to see dogs being taken care of. What it did mean was that meeting Mr. George was going to become a little more difficult. Because they were running dogs all weekend it was hard to pick a time to meet up with them but we finally decided to visit at the vet who was taking care of George's fixing.

When we woke up on Saturday morning, 2-23-09, we were greeted by 4-5 inches of snow! This slowed us down a bit, but we got to Rock Rapids, IA in time to meet our little pup. When they let him out and he came trotting out towards us, I'd have to say it was love at first sight. What a darling little dog (OK, so little is a bad word to describe him)! He was real sweet and mellow, liked sniffing, didn't mind the dogs and cats at the vet and his personality just shinned. When the vet attendant was ready to go to lunch she asked us, "Well so, are going to take him?" I said to Mike, "Taking him home?" - It was more of a statement than a question. He said, "Yup, he's coming home with us." So we filled out the paperwork and made our way to the car.

We tried putting George in the crate we had in the back seat, but he wanted nothing to do with it and planted himself. So rather than force him in we decided to let him sit on the back seat. This arrangement was fine, until he got bored. :) At first he just hoisted himself up on the center console and stood there looking out the window and looking at us. Then he decided that wasn't quite comfortable and torpedoed into Mike's lap while he was driving, Mike swerved a bit. So I dragged the 60 lb. pup onto my lap and we sat there with a big dog in my lap until we could pull over and reorganize.

We ended up moving the kennel into the front seat and taking turns sitting in the back with George. He slept most of the way, poor guy was still re-cooping from his surgery on Friday. After the 5 hour drive, we took George for a walk (Caesar Milan's suggestion) and then let him in to smell the house. He sniffed pretty much all night. He didn't like the stairs at first, but now loves running up and down them on his stubby little legs. I think its a game to him - but its exercise so its fine by me.

He's only had one accident. Pooped once on Jake's watch, but has been good ever since. We are pretty diligent about taking him out, before he has to go. But when he has to go, he lets us know too -- he barks at the back door. He's learning to go in the backyard and not on his walks, so we don't have to carry around poop - eww. He's learning the terms "Whiz/Pee Pee" and "Poopy" - today I told him we couldn't go back inside until he went poopy and he immediately went and pooped and then dragged me to the door. It may have been a coincidence but I'd like to believe he's a smart pup.

He knows his name I think and he knows "No" too. So he's really good about stopping what he's doing if we tell him not too. It might take him testing us two or three times but he's learning what he can and cannot do. For instance, Jake told him not to chew on his slippers (he LOVES shoes) and after telling him "no" a few times now he just looks at them like he wants them but knows he can't have them. He's funny about things he likes. Shoes, couches, garbage, boxes, brown paper bags, sometimes remotes and controllers, some cables, and bags/purses. He generally doesn't chew on things much, he mainly likes to drag things around. Which can be funny with his big ears, big feet and short legs. But he usually stops when you tell him too. And you can always tell when he's got something he's not supposed to because he sprints away with it. He can be naughty in the sense that he acts like a little kid, he will do something he's not supposed to and knows he's not supposed to so he's sneaky about it. Yesterday, Mike caught him jumping off the couch when he came downstairs.

When he's not sleeping, he's playing and when he's not playing, he's sleeping. When we first got him he was tired from his surgery, we thought oh was a sweet mellow dog. As he started to feel better though, the puppy started to come out. He's a hoot. Our first floor is set up in a square with doors leading to the next room, so he runs around in a circle. We like to chase him too, so he just sprints around like a crazy dog. Yesterday, he started chasing his tail. Jake is teaching him to fetch. He likes his squeaky pheasant toy because of its good squeaker but also because when he shakes it and there's a lot more action with the floppy wings. He has a squeaky hippo, a raw hide bone, a rubber ball and a Kong rubber bone with tug of war rope as his official toys. His unofficial toys are a brown paper bag and a Dr Pepper cube box. He LOVES the snow and tolerates the cold. I'll try to get a video of him romping in the snow tomorrow.

When he's calm he likes to be brushed and pet. He's a sucker for a tummy rub and if you pet him just right his foot starts thumping. He's a real cuddler too. He likes nesting in the blankets and putting his head in your lap. When he's sleeping you can play with his ears, pet him and play with his feet and he could care less. He's really laid back that way, he doesn't mind you messing with his body at all, which will make it nice for clipping his toe nails.

We took him to Petsmart last Sunday, so he could pick out his own toys. Unfortunately, we had to pick out his toys because he was too busy watching people and other dogs. He loves dogs and people love him. There were 4 kids and 4 adults all petting him at once while we were trying to pick out toys. They were amazed at the big paws and ears and the stubby widdle legs. One lady asked me if they are always that short, yuppers. A number of people thought he was handsome. We were just glad to see he handled strangers and kids so well. Dogs on the other hand, he's so excited to see other dogs, I think he scares them.

He does have another puppy friend in the neighborhood though. Theo, a 1 year old golden retriever, lives a few blocks over on the 3700 block of Garfield. We run into Jim and Theo when we walk and they pounce at each other, its so cute to see them but they are hard to control on their leashes. We'll be taking George to a dog park once we know he's good with dogs, will come when he's called and also once he's healed enough to play.

George has met both sets of Neighbors. Both love him to pieces. I think our neighbor to the South wants a Basset now. Jerry (to the North) really likes him too. He chuckled when I told him his name was George and he says he's got very pretty markings. He comes over to pet George when ever we're out together.

George isn't really a barker, which is odd since he's a hound. He doesn't really care when people come in the house. He's not too worried about anything, but he has his moments. He doesn't like metallic noises though - clang of metal or scraping of metal. He also doesn't know what to do about shadows or his reflection. He used to bark when we put him to bed, but he's stopped. It's a real deep loud bellow. It scared me the first time - how did such a scary noise come out of that sweet fuzz ball?

We've got him on a schedule now, up at 6:10, eat breakfast, potty, short walk, locked in his back sun room and walked before we leave for work. If Jake is home, he'll let him upstairs while he's on his computer and he basically sleeps all afternoon. Then back to the sun room when Jake goes to work and then when I get home I take him out. When Mike gets home we or he walks him and then its time for dinner. Then we play and lay around. Before bed he goes out again and then its in the sun room until morning. I don't think he liked it at first but he's getting used to it. Tuesday I wore him out so much walking down to the lake and back that Mike barely woke him up to go to the bathroom before it was bedtime.

Having a puppy is time consuming and takes patience. We've never been this tired and we've never slept this well. But we wouldn't change it. As Mike says, "I just want to eat him up he's so cute!" He's a darling and I wouldn't change anything about my little munchkin for the world.

Refinanced!

As of yesterday, we now owe a whole lot of money to Citibank. After only 6 months, we refinanced our home to drop our interest rate, we went from 6.125% to 4.875%. Which is huge over 30 years, its already $125 cheaper every month, which is always awesome.

The process was 100 times better than with US Bank. I think if you will remember back, I was terrible disappointed with the US Bank loan officer and almost closed all of my US Bank accounts to switch to Wells Fargo. But Jody made everything easy, the only bad thing I have to say was at the end it all went so quickly we had to be a little more flexible with when we wanted to close than we wanted to. (Mike had to drive up from St. Paul to Minnetonka to close over his lunch hour.) Although closing took like 20 minutes so it wasn't terrible. But I will say hats off to Jody!

Jody Grieger, our loan officer, involved us only as much as we needed to be. Didn't burden us with excess info or unnecessary paper work. I admit I think she didn't always remember us exactly, but she was super friendly, extremely responsive and very very helpful. Kevin Bosley recommended her back when we first were applying for loans, but we were already in too deep with US Bank. She's really great though I would highly recommend her if you are looking to purchase a house or refinance a current mortgage.

Here's her info:

The FAMOUS Thumb - You Betch-ya!

Viva and Jerry's Country Music Videos (Our Neighbors)

Hello everyone, I know I have mentioned to some of you that our neighbors (to the North) are kind of famous around Minneapolis. (Even Jerry's thumb is famous it's named Cliff and sometimes has its own part of the episode. - He draws a face on it and it talks.) Just mention Viva and Jerry's Country Music Videos and ears perk up. They've been on the Daily Show a couple of times. In the Startribune a lot. I think they've even been on Leno and it's all because they have their own cable access show on Minneapolis Public Access.

Minneapolis Public Access allows anyone in the city of Minneapolis to take classes in video production. Once you have completed the classes you can host and film your own show. I think that's how Viva and Jerry got started, because Viva is listed as the producer.

When we first found out they had a show we were kind of bummed because we weren't planning on getting cable we wanted dish and unless you live in Minneapolis, you don't get the channel. So we weren't going to get it and no one else we knew was going to have it. So one evening we got determined and proceeded to pour through You Tube looking for clips of their show.

Success! We had trouble at first, we couldn't find it on the MTN website. Then we found a few other websites that referred to them, finally we gave up and tried YouTube and guess what we found? Clips from their show and other miscellaneous videos. These guys are awesome and hysterical! I just adore them! Talk about having a passion for life. Whenever we see them they are just so darn friendly. But what's a TV show without fun loving people? Check these out, I am sure you will love them too.

Viva and Jerry do a commercial for Pacifier (the expensive baby clothing store where Sarah Palin's aids bought the now famous baby outfit for her kid while it was on stage at the RNC). They are on from 0:59 to 1:50 skip the rest.

"I hear the train a coming its going round the bend and I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when..." Jerry sings the Folsum Prison Blues. His ode to Johnny Cash, he's a big fan and he loves to sing his country music songs.

Viva and Jerry's Country Music Videos on Blip. (They like to play with the blue screen.)

Some guy taped their show with a video camera:
Clips from the Show #1
Clips from the Show #2

Viva and Jerry at Willie's America Guitar Store w/ Bobby Jensen. (Watch for the famous thumb!)

Viva and Jerry introduce MRTV. Jerry shows off his thumb in this one!

I swear I am not crazy check out the Mt. Holly Mayor's blog. Hey Jerry's a Norwegian, but he's taking pills for it, right Viva? Watch the Viva Spoofs!

Anyone know of a good place to get an oil change?

So, one of the struggles we are having with our new home/new location is trying to find a good place to get an oil change.

When we lived in Ohio, I hate to admit it but, we went to Wal-Mart and I liked the service. Don't ask those guys in Oxford to do anything other than an oil change, but when it came to oil changes - those guys were awesome. They were always super friendly, super nice, and willing to go the extra mile. Did I mention it was cheap!? Their prices beat other people's coupon prices, it was by far the cheapest.

Since moving to Minneapolis though, we haven't the same kind of luck. I went to the Wal-Mart in St. Anthony once to get our oil changed and a new battery put in and boy was that an experience. After dropping off the car, I went and ate at the Subway that was part of the building didn't hear them call my name and after an hour and a half of waiting I went back to figure out what the hell was going on. The lady at the desk went to figure out where the guy was who was working on my car. Turns out she couldn't find him, he left and didn't tell anyone. He realized he couldn't remove the bolt to get the battery in, backed out my car and called me over the intercom. Between when he called and when I got there, the guy randomly wandered off the manager had no idea where he'd gone. Not to mention my car was sitting outside - not getting the oil changed. I was waiting for them and they weren't even working on my car. Needless to say I was livid. So they pull in the car to actually change the oil and I asked the manager to actually check the bolt to make sure he wasn't just being lazy. An hour later, it was ready. I was pissed. They gave me a 9% discount for wasting 2 1/2 hours of my day. Wow, thanks. I was too mad and too annoyed, if I said anything I was going to blow my top so I just left never to return to that store again. And I mean NEVER. I don't care if I am dying of hunger, I won't go back to that store. 9% or like $3 for wasting most of my afternoon, I should have received it for free. Talk about great customer service. I am still mad about it.

Since then the in-law's Intrigue needed it's oil changed. I found a Tires Plus coupon for $20 and thought I'd give it a try. I made an appointment for the Eden Prairie one for over my lunch hour. When I first walked in to the front area it smelled like really bad farts, like so bad I almost coughed. I couldn't wait to get out of that place, P-U! The guy at the front desk was SUPER PUSHY. "Your car is over 75,000 miles you should really be putting a better oil in it", dude, not my car if the guy who owns it puts X oil in it, that's what I am putting in it too. Then he was pushing me to purchase a $15 package to have them check all kinds of things on my car, dude I came in for a freaking oil change - best part was half of the stuff was included in their free service. While I was eating lunch and wasting time at Subway, because I didn't want to wait in the smelly waiting room, I got a call that it was almost ready and that the guy wanted to tell me the things he found wrong with my car. I'm like OK, well I will be there in a second. He's like but don't you want to know whats wrong with your car, I'm like yeah, I'll be there in a second. He was being really pushy and you could tell he wanted to tell me a horror story over the phone so that I'd be like oh yeah go ahead and fix it, because lord knows it sounds worse over the phone and to top it off you are more inclined to just stay where you are and wait if they tell you over the phone. So I get there, he didn't even bother to come out and tell me what was wrong, I just got a list and it was pathetic routine maintenance things like air filters, tire rotation, break fluid flush. I was like you got to be kidding me. Plus it took 45 minutes to change the oil and I had an appointment - man when does it take longer than 30 minutes to change the oil? And guess what, when I got inside it smelt like farts again! It was awful! So needless to say between the pushy people and the smelly front area, I don't want to go there again.

Mike's car is due now too and I am really considering Parent's, the shop down the street we'll have to price them out. All I know is its his car now, he can deal with it. But if anyone has had any good experiences with any oil changing shops around here, please let us know.

Where's the Music Scene?

Where have all the clubs (cowboys) gone?

When buying a home, I didn't expect to have to consider the music scene in my decision. In fact, buying in Minneapolis, I thought I'd be pretty much covered for all genres. When I lived at the U, there was the Quest, the Fine Line, First Ave/7th Street Entry, Triple Rock, etc. Now that we've moved in the only clubs we can find that play Punk are in St. Paul at the Station 4 and Woodbury (a suburb on the opposite side of St. Paul) at the Myth which is a huge venue and not conducive to punk concerts. So basically we moved as far away from the Punk clubs as possible. WTF!

And where did the Quest go? They had great concerts all the time! Now I am lucky if we get one every few months. Seriously, there are rumors of moving, fires, bankruptcy, where did it go? I didn't expect to leave Cincinnati, which has a strong following of Parrot Heads and country listeners to return to a city with a worse punk offering. I mean we saw some awesome bands while we were in Cincinnati by far the best was MXPX at the Mad Hatter. A rinky-dinky club/bar in Covington, KY where 100 fans basically got to experience an amazing band in a REALLY intimate setting. In fact, NOFX and No Use For A Name are playing at the Madison Theater in Covington on March 7th and I got to admit, I am kind of jealous.

Granted, the Drop Kick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Thursday, Senses Fail, and New Found Glory are coming in March, but they are all at the Myth, which is probably one of the worst venues ever - I'd rather see a concert in the Metro Dome parking lot. We saw Thrice and Alkaline Trio at the Myth and it was awful. I couldn't hear the lyrics, too dang much bass, we were packed in like sardines, it was too big, could barely see the band and did I mention fat sweaty gross smelly people kept bumping into me? Yeah, try getting stepped on and smashed into by a big fat sweaty smelly person for 3 hours we'll see how much you enjoy a concert.

Seriously, I just want a medium sized venue with a long list of good punk band concerts, is that too much to ask? Apparently it is in the cities.

Busy

Sorry I haven't updated this lately, we've been well, busy. We're in the middle of removing wallpaper, refinancing, contesting our property taxes, both of us are busy at work and did I mention we're removing wallpaper? We're also periodically looking for furniture and dogs. I've been so busy I didn't even realize that I am almost out of my orientation period at work - February 24th. I think I might take of the 25th, buy a 1/2 gallon of ice cream and veg out on the couch with some girly movies.

Thanks to Angie's family we have gotten a lot done. Her brother's steamer is EXCELLENT! We've removed the 4 layers of wallpaper in the dining room. We removed the fake brick in the kitchen. We started removing the wallpaper in the upstairs hallway/stairway - despite the fact that its painted - its slow but its moving. We found a patch in the hallway that doesn't have wallpaper - just paint. We were able to remove the top layer of latex, but not really the layer underneath - we're not quite sure how were going to get that off. All I know is I am looking forward to it all being gone.

I am also getting pretty anxious for it to be warm again. Not because I can't stand the cold - the cold is the cold, you deal. I am anxious because I know we will be stripping wood, painting, creating a yard, and doing other fun projects that are more easily done outside than in the house or done with the windows open.

No mice since the first and only one - not complaining. We bought a digital SLR - better to document the house changes with. It's pretty sweet. There was a going out of business sale for a Tiffany glass store - so we bought one ceiling fixture and two Tiffany style lamps. We went to Twin's Fest and got Tony Oliva to sign a ball. We had a mini Super Bowl Party, I might have made too much dip. Now I have too many dishes. :) When are we installing that damn dishwasher? I tried to fix the toilet, but shortening the chain didn't help much. I'll be better about updating this, I swear.
